Green Onion - Application Development for a Cause

The Client:

Founded in 2011, the Life Time Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was established on the concept of inspiring “Healthy People, a Healthy Planet, and a Healthy Way of Life.” They have served and prioritized the “Healthy People” aspect of their mission by supporting youth nutrition and movement programs. For this project, Eliassen Group worked with the Life Time Foundation specifically on their web-based portal, Green Onion, a free tool for school nutrition professionals to identify unwanted and watch ingredients from the Ingredient Guide for Better School Food Purchasing. The tool also provides better product alternative ideas to school districts. Automating a formerly manual food label review process enables the Life Time Foundation to assist more school districts around the country more efficiently and supports school districts make more informed food procurement decisions.

The Challenge:

For several years, members of the Life Time Foundation team were manually reviewing product specification sheets and nutrition labels to identify ingredients of concern for numerous school district partners around the country, often reviewing up to 500 food labels per school district, which was an extremely tedious and time-consuming process.

The Solution:

Eliassen began by taking the time to truly understand the goals of application before mending issues and improving the architecture, stability, and efficiency of the existing tool, enabling us to assist with multi-faced problems efficiently. Working within an abbreviated timeline to prepare the tool for the new school year, the course of action was as follows:

  • Initial application and process assessment
  • One-month migration from former client, fully transferring the infrastructure of the tool
  • High-priority fixes while discussing the full spectrum of requirements and improvements for the tool, ensuring all parties were in agreement on expectations
  • Go-live in MVP state to get Green Onion back online for the school year ahead

Eliassen Group provided a team of experienced professionals to assist in this process, including a project manager, software developers, and a senior architect, who used technology that included .NET/C#, React, Microsoft SQL Server, Azure DevOps, Azure Cloud Services, Visual Studio, and Visual Studio Code.

The Result:

Eliassen Group took the Green Onion tool to a functional MVP status in 5 months, and the tool is now in use, and the food label review process is now much easier and less time consuming. The Life Time Foundation is now able to live their mission with greater ease and increase their positive effect on school nutrition around the country.
